ThaliPOS vs Toast

Toast is the most established restaurant-specific POS platform in the US market. The genuine differences are about lock-in and architecture — not about who has more features, because Toast does.

The disclosure this comparison needs

ThaliPOS is pre-launch and onboarding pilot restaurants. It has no published pricing, no customer base, no third-party reviews and no track record. The systems on this page are established products with years of production use, large support organisations and deep feature sets.

That asymmetry is real and you should weigh it. This page compares design and business model — the things that are genuinely comparable today — not maturity, where there is no contest.

What Toast is

Toast is a restaurant-specific, cloud-based POS platform running on its own proprietary Android hardware, with payment processing supplied by Toast and typically sold on a multi-year contract. It covers POS, kitchen display, online ordering, delivery, payroll and more as one integrated ecosystem.

It is a genuinely strong product with breadth ThaliPOS does not have. If you want one vendor for everything from the counter to payroll, with 24/7 support and a large partner ecosystem, Toast is a serious answer to that question.

The three structural differences

Toast software runs on Toast's own proprietary hardware. That gives a tightly integrated, ruggedised product designed for restaurant conditions — and it means the equipment has little resale value and cannot be repurposed if you leave. ThaliPOS runs in a browser on ordinary tablets or small PCs, with standard ESC/POS printers, plain keyboard-wedge scanners and serial scales, bought wherever they are cheapest. We do not sell hardware at all.

Toast requires its own payment processing; you cannot bring a third-party processor. That is the core of the business model, and it means your card rates are not separately negotiable. ThaliPOS uses Stripe, and payouts land in your own connected Stripe account. Neither is unconstrained — but they constrain you differently, and processing is usually the largest line item in a POS relationship.

Toast is typically sold on multi-year terms with auto-renewal and early termination fees. ThaliPOS is pre-launch and pilot terms are discussed individually — which is an advantage in flexibility and a disadvantage in certainty, since there is no standard published contract to point you at.

Offline behaviour

Toast offers an offline mode that keeps the terminal taking orders during an outage. Like most cloud POS platforms, it is a fallback layered on a cloud-primary design.

ThaliPOS inverts that: the store hub holds the authoritative menu and order queue while service runs, in-store screens talk only to it, and the cloud consumes afterwards. The practical test is whether the kitchen display keeps receiving orders during an outage — worth asking any vendor directly, including us. Why the distinction matters →

Where ThaliPOS is different by design

Choose Toast if

For most established US restaurants that need a POS working immediately and are not running Indian formats, Toast is the lower-risk choice today. We would rather say that here than waste your time on a call.

[ FAQ ]

Questions, answered straight

Can I use my own hardware with Toast?

No. Toast software runs on Toast's proprietary hardware. ThaliPOS runs in a browser on ordinary tablets or small PCs with standard peripherals, and we do not sell hardware at all.

Can I use my own payment processor with Toast?

No — Toast requires its own payment processing. ThaliPOS uses Stripe, with payouts to your own connected account.

Is ThaliPOS a replacement for Toast today?

For most established restaurants, not yet. Toast is a mature platform with far greater breadth and a real support organisation; ThaliPOS is pre-launch. The cases where ThaliPOS is genuinely the better fit are unreliable connectivity and Indian restaurant formats.

What is the main architectural difference?

Toast is cloud-primary with an offline fallback. ThaliPOS is offline-first: the in-store hub holds the authoritative menu and order queue during service, and the cloud consumes afterwards.
