What makes catering different
A catering order is scheduled rather than immediate, sized by guest count rather than by portions, usually deposit-backed, and produced alongside normal service. The software problems are lead time, capacity, staged payment and production scheduling — almost none of which an ordinary restaurant POS models at all.
- Lead time. Different items need different notice. A biryani for 200 is not a same-day order, and the system should know that before a customer commits.
- Capacity. Two large orders on one Saturday can be fine or impossible depending on what else is booked. Accepting the second one blind is how a kitchen loses a weekend.
- Staged payment. A deposit at booking, the balance on delivery — a payment lifecycle a normal check does not have.
- Non-linear scaling. Cooking for 200 is not ten times cooking for 20. Recipes, containers and labour all scale differently.
- Collision with service. Production has to be planned around the dinner rush, not discovered during it.
An honest answer about fit today
This is the format where ThaliPOS is least complete, and it is more useful to say so than to describe a roadmap in the present tense.

What works well for events today
- Printed QR codes scoped to a location — at an event, that can be the entire ordering infrastructure, with no hardware to transport.
- Offline-first operation — event venues, marquees and halls are exactly where connectivity fails, and it is where most POS systems stop working.
- Ordinary hardware — a tablet, a hub and a printer travel to a venue and back without a proprietary install.
- Cash that reconciles — business-day close with drawer counts and a cent-exact Z-report including cash.
